Trend Alert: How fasting is changing how consumers consume

Work

Circadian rhythm fasting, 5:2 fasting, even dirty fasting. There are many fasting methods to choose from and it’s a trend we break down in our 2024 Food & Beverage Trend report.

BEHIND THE TREND

Fasting is not a new way of losing weight, but many people are jumping on the trend as a way to burn their unwanted excess weight quickly.

Despite its recent surge in popularity, fasting is a practice that dates back centuries and plays a central role in many cultures and religions.

Some people want to lose weight for health reasons, while others hope to shed pounds to look like the people they see on social media, where influencers portray ideal body images that aren’t easy to obtain.

THE TREND IN ACTION

The most popular fasting method – intermittent fasting – is when someone voluntarily abstains from food or beverages (except for water) for large parts of the day and consumes all of their meals and calories in a single 6-8 hour period.

The #IntermittentFasting hashtag has more than 1.8 billion views on TikTok, and over 54,000 social mentions across different platforms.
